I read about this video as a result of a tweet by Travel Magazine – it’s a ‘tribute’ to the budget travel airline Ryanair, from an Irish group called Fascinating Aida.  Please don’t watch it if you don’t like hearing the odd swearword but it brought a smile to my face.

I have to be honest and say this blog hasn’t quite materialised as I had hoped.  I have a long list of articles to write, and a whole host of destinations to write up about based on this current trip, research, and a previous trip.

Although I’ve done a long term trip before I got absolutely consumed with the amount of preparation to do before I left this time.  Before leaving the last time I only booked my flights two weeks before I left then went volunteering for three months.

For my current trip, there’s been a lot more to think about :

• For one I’m not travelling solo which will bring it’s own adventure to the trip.
• I had a shed load of visas to apply for in advance (well, five) and the last one all came through at the very last minute.
• I had more to pack away than I thought I did.
• I ended up buying some ‘toys before I left – yes I know it’s not the best to overload yourself before travelling but I like photography and it’s the price I’ll pay.

Anyway, I’m pleased to say I’ve not hit the road.  I have many historic updates to make such as how my travel plans have changed since the start (only slightly), and how my research went.

Needless to say the internet always found some interesting sites to look at but I never had time to thoroughly research them all – after all you can plan a trip too much right?

I’m currently in Oman and have been using this week with family to have some rest and relaxation and finally realise that I’ve given up the 9-5 again.  I’m not doing too much over here compared to a trip in 2009 but still have plenty to write up about the place.  I’ve also got a whole bunch of things to write about that I think can come in useful to travellers – with a tendency to lean towards the technology side of things – e.g. how to access some of the comforts of home if you want them.

In 2006 I blogged extensively and used this as my own personal ‘escape’ time to write up about destinations as I moved through them.  This is still my intention this time but it will be interesting to see how that works out when not travelling solo.

So, the real adventure starts on Monday 10th as I fly to Uzbekistan then its about 2.5 months of travel before trying to settle down in some shape or form in New Zealand for up to 12 months.

When you come back from a trip are you surrounded by notes and scribbles in notebooks, on magazines, in your phone and elsewhere with details of places you’ve been, cheap ways to do things and much much more?

No?  Ok, maybe it’s only me.  I’m passionate about travel but normally end up with these notes scattered around various notebooks and backpacks and the little nuggets of information in them end up unviewed and worthless.

This site will become a glorified place for these notes.  It’s the intention to appeal to all travellers, but with a definite slant towards budget travellers – whether that means a backpacker, a career breaker, or someone at the upper end who just wants to save money on their one week break.  It could be a place to visit, a new way of travel networking, websites of use, or good gadgets or gear to help your life on the road (or plane / train / boat!).

There’s three principles I just made up :

• Get value for money (that’s not be a tight arse, I’d just rather stay for 2 weeks than 1!)
• Find out about local cultures and communities (that could be as simple as knowing not to put your feet up on the chair in front of you so as not to offend!)
• Travel responsibly – if you wouldn’t trash your own place, don’t litter when you’re away – that kinda thing.

There you go.  That’s it for now.  I hope the future posts will speak for themselves.
